Project Title: River Test Riverbank Restoration
Objective:
The goal of this project was to reconnect an old, dried-out backwater to the weir, allowing controlled water flow and restoring the riverbank. This involved installing hinge trees to create varied water depths, relocating on-site trees to enhance the bank, and using hazel fascine revetments with hemp rope for stabilization.
Challenges:
The primary challenge was working on soft peat water meadows and within a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), which required careful access and minimal environmental impact.
Equipment and Methods:
A 5-ton excavator with bio-oil and a tilt rotator was used for efficient material movement on soft ground. A custom-built grab-and-drive post driver attachment allowed precise placement of posts.
Outcomes:
On a return visit, it appeared as if no one had been there, blending seamlessly into the natural environment. This was considered the main accomplishment.
